In a recent episode of the C&R’S Master Class for Power Skills, Kenny Brewer, Business Manager of JOC Analytics, shared his expertise on the critical role of mentorship and team building within the restoration industry.
Drawing from his extensive experience in coaching and the military, Kenny emphasized the importance of creating a strong team culture founded on shared values and a clear vision. He likened his experience coaching girls’ varsity basketball to building teams in business: turning a team with little success into a championship contender requires intentional selection of team members who fit the culture and bring a variety of strengths. By understanding what drives each individual, Brewer believes leaders can cultivate a cohesive and motivated team.
Brewer stressed that open communication is the foundation of effective team building. Understanding each member’s motivations, strengths, and needs allows leaders to place them in roles where they can thrive. Sometimes, this means adapting the role to the person instead of the other way around. He shared a recent example where JOC Analytics hired someone who didn’t quite fit the initial job description, but whose potential warranted creating a tailored role that leveraged their unique skills.
For Brewer, mentorship is more than offering advice—it’s about active listening, guidance, and supporting individual growth. He recommends leaders be approachable, encouraging, and willing to share their knowledge freely. Importantly, he highlighted the need for mentors to be coachable themselves, learning through engagement and their own mistakes.
For those aspiring to develop mentorship and team-building skills, Kenny advises stepping out of comfort zones, actively participating in others’ growth, and viewing every interaction as an opportunity to coach, support, and develop others.
